General WikiForAll Questions

Q: What is WikiForAll?

A: See About WikiForAll

Q: Why should I join or get involved?

A: You should join and get involved if you're pretty sure you can make up some pretty original comedy. You can also join if you've got some un-original material (as long as it's referenced appropriately) or if you have some educational stuff to post. If anything, getting involved in the Forums is suggested as you can contribute to any discussions taking place there.

Q: How do I start?

A: Start off by reading the pages we've put up so far. If you just can't wait to get your stuff up, such as a joke, read up on our Policy Agreement and then register for an account. Remember to sign up for the Forums too!

Q: What is the Community Portal?

A: The commnity portal is a place for the Administration Team to inform users about what's happening in the Wiki community and any important new additions that users should know about.

Q: Will WikiForAll always be free?

A: Short answer: Yes. We believe that the internet should be as free as possible for all who use it. Long answer: Sort of. In the future, depending on traffic, we may be running out of bandwidth or the server may need upgrades, and we may have to ask for donations. These would be voluntary, of course.

Q: What plans are in store in the future for WikiForAll?

A: We're always trying to figure out new and improved things for the wiki. At the moment we're just trying to get it running at its full potential, so we're not planning all that much yet. One big thing we're planning is the introduction of a poll system permitting you to tell us what you want. Watch this space for more information.

Q: Who are the WikiAdminTeam and what makes them special?

A: The Wiki Admin Team is the group running the wiki. They're special because they have different privileges to typical users (Sysop) allowing them to edit protected pages, move and delete pages, among other things. However, only one person on the admin team is allowed to perform bans or delete users (WikiSysop), which makes a ban something that must be requested and voted on rather than outright deletion.

Q: What are the rules for using WikiForAll?

A: See Our Policy.

Q: Why is reading the Polices and agreeing to the Policy Agreement important?

A: If you don't you run the risk of losing your account (or worse, getting an IP block) meaning that you can't post content and can't participate. The policies also cover us legally, so if you don't read them (or follow them) then you run the risk of legal action.

Q: Is WikiForAll safe And reliable?

A: We don't distribute any information about you to anybody (see our Privacy Policy) and you choose how much you want to tell in your pages. If you do find that someone is releasing private information please inform one of the Administration Team and we can solve the problem.

Q: In what Countries is WikiForAll Available?

A: Most countries permit access to WikiForAll. As long as you have a working internet connection and can reach Google you should be able to reach us.

Q: In what Languages is WikiForAll Available?

A: So far only English. We don't have any translators on the crew, and don't trust automatic translation.

Q: How does the Navigation Panel work?

A: You simply click the link and it will take you there. Too easy :D.

Q: How does the Search Engine work?

A: The search tool on the left for GuMax (right for Dusk) with Google above it allows you to search Google for anything. In the GuMax skin the site search is on the top (opposite the date) and in Dusk the site search is above the Google search. Just type in what you're looking for and hit Search (or Enter).

Your Profile

Q: Do I have to create a Profile?

A: No, but without one you can't post stuff.

Q: What is that pixelated different colour picture with a box?

A: It's a "Captcha", which is apart of WikiForAll's security, and it stops bad software automatically creating accounts and logging in.

Q: Can I change my User Name?

A: Not once you've registered, so make sure that you're happy with your choice.

Q: Someone's written a testimonial about me. What if I don't want to publish it?

A: You have several options: request support via the Forums, email an administrator, or take it up with that person yourself. We recommend the email method, as it is more private and reduces the chance of flame wars or similar.

Q: Can I point my friends towards a page that's mine in WikiForAll?

A: Of course! Point them to anything in WikiForAll, and tell everyone about it if you want.

Your Account

Q: I forgot my password!!

A: At the login screen you should be able to ask for a password reset. We've worked hard to get email working properly, so it should email you a reset password. Remember to change it later!

Q: How do I change my password?

A: Go to your Preferences page (link at the top in GuMax or right in Dusk) when logged in.

Q: I have two email addresses, and I want my friends to be able to find me in here using either one. Do I have to create two accounts?

A: We don't want people to have more than one account, and it isn't possible to have more than one email address per account. Just put both email addresses on your user page (User:<username>) if you want both visible.

Q: I don't want people to see my real name. How do I fix that?

A: Put in something that isn't your real name when you're asked for it.

Q: Do I have to get an email from WikiForAll for every little thing?

A: No, you can change what you get emailed about in the Preferences section.

Q: How do I set up email notifications?

A: See the previous question.

Q: I signed up to receive notifications daily (or weekly), where are they?

A: You may have entered an invalid email address, you may need to check your Junk Email Folder or (more likely) we're having email issues on our side.

Q: If I sign up for activity notification by email, will I get an email for each and every change to my articles?

A: Yes, though again, in the Preferences you can decide exactly what to receive.

Q: HTML email, ugh!

A: We try to send email in plain-text as much as possible.

Q: Why can't I change my personal URL?

A: Your personal URL is set to http://www.wikiforall.net/wiki/User:<username>, which is a limitation set by the software running WikiForAll.

Q: How do I delete my account?

A: Contact an administrator.

Q: I deleted my account, but didn't really want to! What do I do?

A: Contact an administrator.

On The WikiForAll Website

Q: I have concerns about something I've seen on the site. What can I do?

A: The easiest thing to do is post in the Forums or contact an administrator.

Q: I think an account may have been compromised, what happened and what can I do?

A: Contact an administrator. DO NOT post in the Forums relating to compromised accounts.

Q: I have a great idea for a feature! How can I suggest it?

A: The Forums.

Q: What considerations have been given to copyright?

A: See Our Policy. You must stick to Australian Copyright Law when you post anything. Anything you put up that is your own work gets put under the GPL.

Q: I've found my work on someone else's website, what do I do?

A: There's not a lot we can do, but you can contact the Administration Team and we'll try to communicate with the owners of the other website, which will hopefully end up with the removal of the un-referenced information.

Q: Can I have HTML in my posts on the WikiForAll website?

A: Just type it straight in. Use the Sandbox to test things out.

Q: What are the site's System Requirements?

A: We'd suggest at least a 56 kbps dialup connection, and a suitable browser that understands images and javascripts.

Q: The site is acting weird! Things aren't saving...content is missing...what gives??

A: We might be reconfiguring the database or something might be up on our server. Contact the adminstration team.

Q: Help! My images are all red x's (or broken icons, not loading, etc.)

A: Something's broken either on our side or yours, though typically it's something on your end. Make sure your browser supports images and that you've enabled them. If other sites work, contact the Administration Team.

Q: You've asked me to clear cache on a page or the browser – how do I do that?

A: In most browsers it's simply Control+F5, sometimes only F5.

Q: I'm having all sorts of trouble logging in. Help!

A: Make sure you've enabled cookies

Q: Need to talk to someone?

A: #wikiforall.net on irc.freenode.net is open for periods of time during the day. This will allow you to contact any member of the Administration Team for the assistance you require. Otherwise, check out the Forums.
